Should I clean ceiling mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had a few weeks back, I noticed some mold starting to form in the ceiling of our second-floor apartment. The cleaning company we usually hire said they can’t do the upper floors this year due to scheduling conflicts. With Ramadan approaching and guests coming over, is there someone who specializes in high-up areas or should I consider doing it myself?

Cleaning ceiling mold during Ramadan can indeed be a challenging task, especially after the heavy rains we've had. With guests coming over and the need to maintain a clean environment, it’s crucial to handle this responsibly.

First off, UAE regulations require that indoor environments meet certain standards of cleanliness and health, particularly when hosting visitors. Mold growth on ceilings could pose health risks, especially during Ramadan when people are more prone to respiratory issues due to prolonged periods indoors.

Given the situation, I’d recommend a professional inspection first. This is not only to confirm the extent of mold growth but also to ensure that it's properly identified and addressed according to UAE standards (such as EN 15321 for indoor air quality). Call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com if you need help with this.

If a professional inspection confirms that you can manage the mold yourself, here are some practical steps:

Firstly, ensure proper ventilation. Open windows and use fans to circulate air and dry out the area as much as possible. This is especially important in Dubai’s humid climate during Ramadan.

Secondly, gather the right tools. You’ll need a scrub brush, a bucket of water and bleach solution (a mix of one part bleach to ten parts water), and protective gear like gloves and goggles.

Thirdly, tackle the mold spot-by-spot. Start from an area that's less visible or where no one will be present for a while. Scrub gently with your brush and the bleach solution. Be thorough but gentle; avoid causing damage to the ceiling material.

Fourthly, clean up carefully. Dispose of all contaminated materials in sealed bags before washing them separately. Clean your brushes and tools thoroughly as well.

Lastly, dry the area completely. Use fans or a dehumidifier if necessary to prevent mold from returning.

If you find that the mold is extensive or if it keeps coming back despite your efforts, consider calling professionals again. They have specialized equipment and experience in dealing with persistent mold issues.

Remember, safety comes first—both for yourself and your guests. Proper cleaning can go a long way in ensuring everyone's health during Ramadan.
