Is dust from outside worsening my son's asthma?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I noticed my son has been having trouble breathing at night. The bedroom where he sleeps is on the second floor of our apartment, right next to the main entrance, so it tends to collect a lot of dust and debris from outside. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed that his asthma seems to be getting worse since then. Has anyone else experienced similar issues in Dubai? Are there specific cleaning products or methods recommended for asthma sufferers in this kind of environment?

Yes, it's very possible that the dust from outside is worsening your son’s asthma. In Dubai and especially during storms like the one we had last month, fine particles can infiltrate your home through open windows or even through small gaps around doors and windows. These particles can trigger asthmatic symptoms in those who are sensitive to them.

In a place like ours where high temperatures and humidity levels fluctuate greatly, dust mites and mold spores can also thrive, further exacerbating respiratory issues. The bedroom on the second floor of your apartment is more susceptible to collecting these particulates due to its proximity to the main entrance; it's common for dust and debris to settle here.

Dubai has specific regulations regarding indoor environmental quality but unfortunately, there isn't a strict control over outdoor dust levels. It’s important to keep your home as clean and free of allergens as possible. Here are some steps you can take:

Firstly, ensure that you have an air purifier that's designed for capturing fine particles. Models with HEPA filters are particularly effective in removing dust mites, pollen, and other small particulates.

Secondly, regular cleaning is crucial. Use microfiber cloths which trap dust better than cotton ones. Vacuum your carpets and floors thoroughly every day using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to remove allergens effectively.

Thirdly, consider installing door sweeps or weather stripping around doors to prevent more dust from entering the home during storms.

Fourthly, ensure good ventilation but keep windows closed when outdoor pollution levels are high. It’s also wise to have professional indoor air quality inspections done every now and then, especially if you notice a change in your son's asthma symptoms.

Lastly, keep the bedroom as clean and dry as possible, as moisture can promote mold growth which can worsen asthma. Use dehumidifiers where necessary and always ensure proper ventilation.

If you find that these measures are not enough or if your son’s condition continues to deteriorate, it might be a good idea to call in a professional for an inspection. Our company, Saniservice, offers comprehensive indoor air quality assessments and remediation services. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or via email at hello@saniservice.com.
