Why is mold just starting in my bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a mildew smell coming from under the bathroom sink. When I checked closer, there was some greenish mold growing on the underside of the cabinet. Given how long we’ve had this house (almost 2 years now), why is it only just becoming an issue? What should I do to clean this up properly and prevent it from happening again?

Why is mold just starting in my bathroom? Well, it's not unusual for dampness and moisture to cause such issues, even in a well-maintained home. In Dubai and the UAE, humidity can be high due to our climate, especially during certain seasons like summer or when there’s been recent rainfall. The greenish mold you've noticed under your bathroom sink could be a result of several factors including poor ventilation, inadequate drainage, or even minor leaks that went unnoticed for some time.

Given how long you’ve owned this house, it's possible that the initial installation of pipes, plumbing fixtures, or waterproofing measures might not have been fully effective. In the UAE, there are specific building codes and standards such as EN 13507 which specify minimum levels of moisture content in building materials to prevent mold growth. However, even with these regulations, issues can still occur if maintenance is ignored over time.

To properly clean up this issue, you should first ensure the area is fully dried out. This may involve running a fan or dehumidifier for some days after cleaning. After that, you'll want to use a mixture of water and detergent or a commercial mold cleaner to scrub away the mold. Be sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear during this process.

For a long-term solution, consider improving the bathroom’s ventilation by installing an exhaust fan if it's not already in place. Also, ensure that any condensation is properly managed through adequate drainage systems. Regularly inspect your bathroom for signs of leaks or water damage; even small issues can lead to mold growth over time.

If you find this task overwhelming or feel like the issue might be more serious than just a minor spot of mold, it's recommended to call in professional inspection and remediation services. In Dubai, companies like Saniservice (call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com) can provide detailed assessments and solutions tailored to your specific situation.

Remember, prevention is key! Keeping the humidity levels low and ensuring good air flow around potential moisture-prone areas will go a long way in preventing future mold issues.
