Should I be worried about sand tracking inside?« Back to Previous Page

After the strong winds last week, I noticed sand and debris starting to accumulate on the carpet by our living room windows. The coast is about a kilometer from my apartment in Mirdiff, so there's always some sand, but this seems more than usual. My kids play outside often, and I'm worried about them tracking this into the house. Should I be concerned about potential health issues for my family?

Hello there! It's understandable to be concerned about the sand and debris tracking inside your apartment after those strong winds. In the UAE, particularly in areas closer to coastlines like Mirdiff, it’s common to experience a bit of sand due to nearby construction or natural weather events.

However, with such an increase in sand coming through your windows, you might want to assess whether this could pose any health risks for your family. Sand and debris can carry particles that are not good for indoor air quality and may contain small amounts of salt from the coast which can irritate respiratory passages, especially for kids who play outside often.

Firstly, make sure you clean up immediately by sweeping or vacuuming the affected area to prevent any further entry into your home. It’s advisable to use a HEPA filter vacuum if possible as it helps in capturing finer particles that standard vacuums might miss.

Given how close you are to the coast, I'd recommend checking for any gaps around windows and doors where sand could be entering. Seal these areas if necessary with weather-stripping or caulking to keep out more sand in the future.

If you notice any unusual symptoms like coughing or sneezing from your family members after this incident, it might be wise to consult a professional indoor air quality inspection. In Dubai and the UAE, there are specific regulations regarding indoor environmental quality but they typically focus on larger-scale issues rather than day-to-day concerns.

Considering the potential health impacts, I'd suggest reaching out to a local environmental inspection company for a thorough check-up of your apartment's air quality. They can provide guidance tailored to your situation and ensure that any necessary steps are taken to maintain a healthy indoor environment for your family.

Don't forget that keeping windows closed during sandstorms or high winds is also beneficial in reducing the entry of sand into your home. You might want to invest in some good-quality window covers if you haven't already got them installed.

Lastly, staying informed about weather conditions and any advisories from local authorities can help you prepare better for such events in the future.
