Can I handle mold removal myself?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in the basement of our apartment, and when I checked, there was a small patch of mold growing on one of the walls. The AC seemed to be keeping it at bay for now, but I’m not sure how long that will last. Can someone advise if this is something I can handle myself or if we need to call in professionals?

Sure, I'll give it a go. Handling mold removal yourself can be a viable option for small patches of mildew but always keep the UAE regulations and safety guidelines in mind. If you're dealing with just a little spot like what you described, then yes, you might manage to tackle that on your own. Here are some steps to follow:

Firstly, ensure you have all necessary equipment: gloves, goggles, mask, and some effective cleaning products. In the UAE, it's essential to check if your chosen cleaner is approved by local authorities or recommended by environmental health experts.

Secondly, before you start, take a moment to assess the situation. If the mold has spread beyond a small patch or if it's on porous materials like drywall, carpet, or wood, professional help may be needed. In Dubai and other parts of UAE, there are specific guidelines that must be followed for larger mold issues.

Thirdly, start by removing any water-damaged items to prevent further growth. Then, clean the affected area with a mixture of water and detergent, or use products like bleach diluted in water (though check local regulations on using bleach as it's not allowed everywhere). For stubborn stains, baking soda can also work well.

Fourthly, after cleaning, make sure you thoroughly dry out the space. Mold loves moisture so dehumidifiers are a good investment if humidity levels remain high.

Lastly, seal any gaps or areas where water could get in to prevent future issues. Regular maintenance like this will help keep your home mold-free.

However, it’s always wise to consult with professionals when dealing with larger areas of mold or if you're unsure about the extent of the problem. Here at Saniservice, we can provide a free inspection and advice on how best to proceed. You can call us on 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for more information.

Remember, safety first! Take appropriate measures to protect yourself during the cleaning process. If you notice any health issues like coughing, sneezing, or skin irritation after dealing with mold, seek medical advice immediately.
