How can I clean airborne dust after a storm?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I noticed a thick layer of dust collecting on everything in my bedroom. Even though I clean regularly, it seems like the storm brought in so much more than usual. The air feels stuffy and unpleasant to breathe. How can I ensure that such large amounts of airborne particles don’t accumulate again and make the air cleaner to breathe?

Cleaning airborne dust after a heavy storm can be a daunting task but with the right approach, you can achieve a cleaner and healthier indoor environment. The situation you described is quite common in Dubai and other parts of the UAE where storms can bring in significant amounts of particulate matter.

Firstly, it's important to acknowledge that air filtration systems are crucial for maintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) especially after such events. In Dubai, local regulations might not explicitly mandate specific brands or types of filters, but choosing an efficient one is key. Look for high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters which can capture tiny particles like dust mites and pollen. The UAE doesn’t have strict mandates on these yet, but it’s a good practice to follow.

Secondly, professional inspection might be necessary if you suspect that the storm has caused significant damage or contamination. Call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for an assessment. They can provide expert advice and services tailored to the UAE context. They’ll check for signs of mold growth which is a common issue after storms in this climate.

To clean up, start by opening windows if it’s safe to do so. This allows fresh air to circulate and helps remove some airborne particles. However, be mindful of outdoor conditions - strong winds could bring more dust inside. A damp cloth or sponge can help gather loose particles but avoid using a vacuum cleaner unless you’re sure it has a HEPA filter; otherwise, it might just spread the dust around.

Invest in microfiber cloths which are great at trapping dust and other particulates. For harder surfaces like floors and furniture, use a soft-bristled brush or a slightly damp cloth to sweep away visible dust. Regular cleaning with these methods can reduce the amount of airborne particles over time.

Lastly, consider installing air purifiers specifically designed for high-particle environments. These devices work by drawing in contaminated air, filtering out the pollutants, and then releasing clean air back into your space. In the UAE, it’s a good idea to select products that are tested for performance under local environmental conditions.

By taking these steps, you can significantly improve indoor air quality after a storm. Remember though, prevention is key. Regular cleaning practices and using proper filtration systems will help keep airborne particles at bay in between storms too.
