Should I fix closet mold DIY or hire pros?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a moldy smell coming from my son’s room closet. It’s really damp down there with all his sports gear taking up space. Given we’ve only had it for two years, shouldn’t this be fixed quickly and effectively? Should I look into hiring professionals or is there an affordable DIY method that could work?

Fixing closet mold is definitely something that needs to be handled properly. Given the climate and regulations of the UAE, particularly in Dubai, it's wise to take a thorough approach.

Firstly, i'd suggest you call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. This can help identify if there are deeper issues like structural dampness which may require more than just surface cleaning. In the UAE, especially in newer constructions like yours that’s only two years old, we often see unexpected moisture issues from plumbing leaks or even condensation due to temperature fluctuations.

If after getting your inspection and it's deemed safe for DIY, there are still some steps you can take. A good start would be to remove all items stored inside the closet and dry them out if possible. Use a dehumidifier or an air conditioner to keep humidity levels down. Scrubbing the mold with a mixture of water and a few squirts of bleach could work, but ensure you wear gloves, goggles, and a mask while doing so.

However, given that this is Dubai and we have stringent building codes regarding indoor environmental quality, i'd recommend consulting professionals even for DIY solutions to ensure they comply with local regulations. They can also advise on long-term measures like improving ventilation or checking for any leaks in the closet area which might be causing the dampness.

Remember, while DIY methods can save money, it's crucial to get it right to avoid future problems and ensure a healthy environment for your family. If you're unsure about anything, always opt for professional advice or services.

Take care of this quickly; mold can spread rapidly under humid conditions and could pose health risks especially with children around.
