Is our air conditioning causing health issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be running constantly these days, even though it’s not that hot outside. My 5-year-old son has had a persistent cough and my partner complains of frequent headaches. The air feels stale, especially at night when we try to keep the windows closed due to the humidity. Could this be linked to our air conditioning or is there something else in the environment that might pose a health risk?

Absolutely, it does sound like your air conditioning system might be contributing to the health issues in your apartment. In Dubai and the UAE, high humidity levels and an often dry environment can lead to a buildup of contaminants such as dust mites, mold spores, and bacteria within the air conditioning units and ducts. These elements can circulate through your home, leading to respiratory issues like coughing or exacerbating existing ones.

In your case, the constant running of the AC might be due to poor efficiency, possibly from a clogged filter or an insufficient system for the space you are in. This could lead to stagnant air and humidity levels that don't allow for proper ventilation—a common scenario especially during summer months when it's not too hot outside.

The stale feeling at night is also quite telling. With windows closed due to high humidity, there's a chance that indoor pollutants can accumulate, leading to an increase in CO2 levels which might contribute to headaches. It’s not uncommon for such conditions to trigger or worsen respiratory issues like coughing and even cause headaches in adults.

Given these circumstances, it would be wise to get your AC system inspected by a professional. The regulations in the UAE require regular servicing of HVAC systems to ensure they operate efficiently and are free from mold and other harmful contaminants. In Dubai, for instance, there's no specific mandatory service but adhering to best practices can certainly help maintain indoor air quality.

Remember, keeping up with regular maintenance is key in maintaining healthy indoor air quality, not just in Dubai but anywhere in the UAE.
