Is ductwork related to family coughs and odor?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed a strange, lingering smell in the hallway right outside our bedrooms. My children have also started to cough more frequently, especially after they play in that area. Could this be related to the ductwork in our apartment? What should I do to ensure their safety and health?

Ductwork is indeed one of the potential culprits behind those lingering odors and family coughs. In Dubai & the UAE, we often experience dust storms that can introduce a lot of particulate matter into our homes. These particles can get trapped in your duct system, leading to an accumulation over time which might not be visible but certainly affects air quality.

In your case, it sounds like the recent dust storm could have stirred up old debris and pollutants stored within your ducts, especially if they weren’t cleaned for some time. This could explain why you're noticing a strange smell in the hallway outside your bedrooms and why your kids are coughing more after playing there. The irritants in the air can be particularly problematic for children with sensitive respiratory systems.

To ensure the safety and health of your family, I'd recommend getting your ducts inspected professionally. In the UAE, it's important to comply with local regulations which may require regular maintenance or cleaning depending on the age of your property and its use. Here in Dubai, the Building Services Department does not enforce mandatory duct cleaning but it is recommended as part of a broader indoor air quality management strategy.

A professional inspection can help identify if there are issues like mold growth, accumulation of dust, or other contaminants that need to be addressed. A licensed contractor will clean your ducts thoroughly and ensure they meet the standards set by organizations such as ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).

To get started, you could call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 for a consultation. They can assess your ductwork and provide a detailed cleaning plan if necessary. Alternatively, email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an appointment.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is key to reducing health risks in your home. Regular inspections and cleanings of your HVAC system, including the ducts, can significantly improve the environment for you and your family, especially during and after dusty weather events like those we've had recently.

Take care and stay healthy!
