Is that slimy substance harmful mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy storms we had last month, I noticed a strange slimy substance growing along the base of the wall by our balcony doors. It looks like some kind of algae or mold, and it has a musty odor that’s driving me crazy. The problem seems to be getting worse as the days go by. Has anyone else experienced something similar in their home, and what can we do about it?

Absolutely, it sounds like you might be dealing with mold growth. Mold is quite common especially after heavy storms, and it's important to address the issue promptly as some types can indeed pose health risks. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we often experience humid conditions which can create ideal environments for mold to thrive.

Mold spores are airborne and can spread quickly once they find a moist environment like you've described by your balcony doors. The musty odor is a clear sign that mold might be present, especially if it's worsening over time. Mold can cause respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and in some cases, more severe health effects.

Given the specific conditions in Dubai, where humidity levels can fluctuate significantly due to climate change and nearby bodies of water, it’s crucial to address this issue seriously. I would recommend having a professional inspection done by calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com. They have experience with local conditions and can provide the necessary assessment.

While waiting for their visit, here are some steps you can take:
1. Ensure proper ventilation: Open windows if possible to allow fresh air in.
2. Clean the area: Use a mixture of water and detergent to clean the affected areas. Be thorough!
3. Dry out quickly: Mold grows best in damp conditions so try to dry out as fast as possible.

Remember, even though it might seem manageable at first, mold can spread rapidly. It's always better to be proactive about addressing it promptly to avoid any health risks and potential structural damage.
