Can I clean up mildew myself?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from my bedroom closet. Even after airing out everything, the odor persists and there seems to be some mildew growing on the back wall near where water pooled during the storm. Can anyone advise if this is something I can clean up myself or if I should call in professionals?

Absolutely, you can tackle the mildew yourself with some caution and proper guidance. In the UAE especially, it's essential to be mindful of local regulations concerning indoor air quality and mold remediation. For example, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) is keen on ensuring that buildings are well-maintained and free from harmful pollutants.

First up, let’s talk about what you can do yourself. Begin by opening windows for adequate ventilation if possible. Use a fan to increase airflow, which helps in drying out the area faster and reducing the humidity that supports mold growth. Make sure to wear gloves and mask to protect your skin and respiratory system from exposure. Mildew can be quite stubborn, so it's important to use an appropriate cleaner.

For a mild case of mold like yours, a mixture of water and vinegar or baking soda might do the trick. Vinegar is acidic enough to help break down the mold while baking soda can neutralize odors. Spray the solution onto the affected area, scrub gently with a brush, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Scrubbing too hard could damage your walls so be careful.

However, if the mold covers more than 10 square feet or if you notice any health issues like sneezing, coughing, or skin irritations, it's best to seek professional help. The UAE has stringent standards for indoor environments and professionals will ensure that the area is thoroughly cleaned and treated. They can also provide advice on how to prevent mold growth in the future.

Don't hesitate to contact us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com if you need assistance. We are here to ensure your home stays healthy and safe. Remember, early detection and action can save a lot of headache down the line.

Remember, in Dubai, it's also important to keep an eye on the weather patterns and take preventive measures during rainy seasons to avoid mold issues. Regular inspections can be beneficial as well.
