Is duct mold causing our home issues?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I noticed a distinct musty odor coming from the vents in our master bedroom. It’s been lingering there ever since, and it’s quite unpleasant. The kids have also been complaining of coughing fits more often than usual. Could this be related to duct issues, and if so, how can I prevent something like this from happening again?

Absolutely, the musty odor and the kids' coughing fits could be linked to mold growing within your ductwork. In the UAE, especially during sandstorms, the air quality can drastically drop, allowing dust and other particulates to infiltrate your home's ventilation system. If not properly cleaned or maintained, these systems can become breeding grounds for mold spores.

In Dubai, it's imperative that you get a professional inspection done as soon as possible. Local regulations may require periodic duct cleaning and inspections, but it’s wise to check with the Building Services Authority (BSA) for the latest guidelines specific to your area. If you notice persistent issues like yours, calling in an expert is highly recommended. They can assess whether there's mold growth within the ducts or elsewhere in the ventilation system.

For now, keep the affected bedroom well-ventilated by opening windows if possible and consider using a portable air purifier with a HEPA filter to help reduce airborne contaminants. Also, ensure that your family avoids touching or blowing into the vents as this can disperse mold spores further.

When you do call for professional inspection, ask about how they plan to disinfect the ducts and what measures they take to prevent recontamination. A thorough cleaning might include vacuuming, drying out the ductwork, and treating it with a mold inhibitor if necessary. Regular maintenance is key – aim for at least once every few years depending on your local conditions.

Remember, prevention is always better than cure. Consider scheduling regular professional inspections and cleanings to keep your home environment healthy. If you need assistance, feel free to call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
