What are the signs of dust storms?« Back to Previous Page

After the dust storm that hit Dubai a few days ago, we noticed a layer of fine sand settling on everything in our bedroom window area. The AC filter is also clogged with tiny particles, and my kids have been complaining about their throats hurting. Is there anything I can do to clean up the house without making it worse?

Dust storms can be quite disruptive, especially here in the UAE and Dubai. The most common signs of dust storms include heavy winds that kick up sand and dirt from nearby areas. You might also notice a sudden drop in visibility to less than 1 kilometer. In Dubai, these events often occur during the summer months due to strong winds and dry conditions.

In your home, you'd likely see fine sand settling on surfaces like windowsills, furniture, and electronics, just as you've observed with your bedroom window area. The accumulation of dust can be particularly noticeable in corners or areas that are less frequently cleaned. Your AC filter getting clogged with tiny particles is another tell-tale sign.

Given the discomfort your kids have been experiencing, it’s wise to address this promptly. Dust storms can release a lot of fine particulates into the air, which can irritate the respiratory system and exacerbate conditions like allergies or asthma.

To clean up without making things worse, start by wearing protective gear such as a mask and goggles when you're cleaning. This will help prevent inhaling particles that could cause further irritation to your throat or any existing health concerns for your kids.

Begin with areas that are easily accessible and visible first, like windowsills, surfaces, and furniture. Use a damp cloth to wipe away the fine sand; this helps trap the dust instead of just redistributing it through the air. Be sure to clean behind and underneath electronics as well to avoid any issues later on.

Next, focus on cleaning hard-to-reach areas such as corners and under furniture using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter if you have one. This can help in capturing more fine particles than standard vacuums.

Regarding the AC filter, it's crucial to clean or replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A clogged filter can lead to poor air quality and might even strain your system over time. If unsure, consider having a professional inspect and clean it.
