Is this white powder harmful to breathe?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I noticed a lot of fine, white powder settling on everything in our living room. It’s everywhere – on the furniture, windowsills, even my kids’ toys. I’m really worried it might be harmful for them to breathe this stuff. Should I start deep cleaning right away or is there something else I should do first?

Is this white powder harmful to breathe?

The fine, white powder you're seeing could be a variety of things from the recent dust storm. It might just be common dust but it's definitely concerning as well as potentially harmful if it contains anything like silica or certain types of dust that are associated with construction sites or industrial areas.

In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we do experience these kinds of weather events that can stir up a lot of fine particulate matter. However, without knowing what exactly caused this powder, it's hard to definitively say if it is harmful to breathe.

To be on the safe side and ensure your family’s health isn’t at risk, I would recommend calling in a professional for an inspection first. Local regulations such as those set by Dubai Municipality may require certain standards of indoor air quality that can help guide us on what to look out for during our assessment.

Saniservice is one company you could reach out to - their number is 800-MOLDS or they offer email support at hello@saniservice.com. They have experience in analyzing such situations and will be able to provide a thorough inspection that can give us peace of mind about the air quality in your home.

If after consulting with an expert, it's determined that the powder is indeed harmful, deep cleaning should definitely be part of the process. Focus on areas like the living room where you've noticed the most accumulation and try to use HEPA filters during cleaning sessions as they can trap tiny particles effectively.

In the meantime, keep windows and doors closed to prevent more dust from entering your home. And remember, if you notice any unusual symptoms in yourself or your kids after exposure, it's always wise to seek medical advice promptly.

Do not panic but take this situation seriously - your family’s health is paramount!
