Should I report persistent dampness to landlord?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a persistent dampness in the corner of the living room where the carpet meets the wall. It's particularly noticeable near the windows, even though the floor is relatively dry. My landlord hasn’t mentioned anything about it during our monthly inspections. Has anyone else experienced similar issues with rentals, and what do you think I should do?

Absolutely, reporting persistent dampness to your landlord is crucial. In the UAE, especially in areas like Dubai which are prone to humidity fluctuations and occasional rain, such issues can lead to serious problems if left unaddressed.

Firstly, dampness in corners where carpets meet walls can be a sign of underlying moisture issues that may not only cause discomfort but also pose health risks. Mold growth is a common consequence, especially when there's an extended period of dampness and poor ventilation. The UAE has specific regulations regarding indoor air quality and building maintenance to ensure occupant safety (check out the Building Control Regulations and Standards issued by the Dubai Municipality).

I'd recommend scheduling a professional inspection as soon as possible. Saniservice, for instance, offers comprehensive mold and moisture inspections that can identify the root causes of dampness and provide tailored solutions. They can be reached at 800-MOLDS or via email at hello@saniservice.com.

In the meantime, you can try to mitigate the issue by ensuring proper ventilation in your living room. Open windows if possible during dry spells, use dehumidifiers, and consider applying a moisture barrier around the affected area if it's feasible without causing damage to the carpet or wall.

Remember, addressing these issues early can prevent more significant problems down the line. If you experience any health concerns or notice mold growth, it’s imperative to act quickly. Your landlord has a responsibility to maintain safe living conditions for tenants as per UAE laws and regulations. Don't hesitate to bring this matter up in your next inspection.

Stay proactive about indoor environmental quality!
