Can I clean mildew myself?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain we had last month, I noticed a musty smell in the bedroom closet where we keep all the winter clothes. When I opened it up, there was a mildew patch on one of the old blankets. It’s not too big, but it’s certainly noticeable. Do you think I can clean this myself or should I call in an expert?

Cleaning mildew yourself is possible but depends on the extent of the problem. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, it's crucial to understand that humidity can significantly contribute to mold growth, especially after heavy rains. The musty smell and visible patch of mildew on your blanket indicate a potential issue that might require more than just DIY cleaning.

Firstly, you should assess the size of the mildew area. If it’s small—like less than 1 square meter—you can try tackling it yourself using common household products. Start by thoroughly drying the affected area to prevent further growth. Mildew thrives in damp environments, so ensuring good ventilation is key.

For cleaning, mix a solution of one part bleach with nine parts water. Apply this mixture to the mildewed area and let it sit for about five minutes before scrubbing gently. Afterward, rinse with water and dry completely. It’s important to wear gloves and protective clothing during the process to avoid skin irritation or allergic reactions.

However, if the affected area is larger, or you notice any signs of mold growth on other surfaces such as walls, ceilings, or even in your air conditioning systems, it would be wise to seek professional help. In Dubai, regulations require businesses dealing with environmental issues to follow strict guidelines which may not allow for DIY methods that could compromise safety or further damage the property.

Remember that mold can pose health risks and if left untreated, can spread quickly throughout the house. So, if you're unsure about the extent of the problem or are uncomfortable handling it yourself, calling in a professional is recommended. You can contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or email them at hello@saniservice.com for expert advice and remediation services.

Taking prompt action will help prevent further damage to your belongings and maintain good indoor environmental quality—something that’s particularly important considering the climate conditions in Dubai.
