Should I alert my landlord about the moldy smell?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange moldy smell lingering in my bedroom, which gets worse when I close the windows. It’s concerning because we’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it this time around. The landlord hasn’t mentioned anything about air quality or maintenance related to indoor air. Should I bring this up with them?

Absolutely, it's wise to bring up the moldy smell with your landlord. In Dubai and other parts of the UAE, maintaining a healthy indoor environment is crucial due to our climate and weather patterns. The presence of mold can pose health risks such as allergies or respiratory issues, especially in humid conditions.

Given that you've noticed this smell only after rain, it's possible that moisture has seeped into your bedroom through walls, windows, or the roof. This could be exacerbated by poor ventilation or insufficient maintenance of the building’s systems. According to UAE regulations, landlords are responsible for ensuring their properties maintain a safe and hygienic condition (check with local authorities for specific laws related to indoor air quality).

To address this issue effectively, I recommend scheduling an inspection from a professional company like ours. They can assess whether the mold is active or dormant, determine its source, and suggest appropriate remediation steps. Call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for assistance.

In the meantime, try to improve air circulation by opening windows when it's not raining heavily and using a dehumidifier if available. Keep your room dry and clean to prevent mold from spreading further. If you notice any water damage or leaks, report them immediately to your landlord as well.

Remember, early detection and action can save both money and health issues in the long run. Don't hesitate to reach out for professional help if needed.
