Is ductwork issues causing my cough?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent dust storm that hit our area last week, I’ve noticed a persistent dry cough when we’re using the AC in my bedroom at night. The windows are sealed tight, so it’s not coming from outside. Could this be related to ductwork issues? How often should I have my ducts cleaned to prevent this from happening again?

Ductwork issues could very well be the cause of your persistent cough. Dust and allergens can accumulate in the ducts over time especially after a dusty storm like the one we've recently experienced. This dirt and debris can circulate through your air conditioning system and into your bedroom, causing irritation to your respiratory tract.

In Dubai/UAE, it's not uncommon for dust storms to kick up large amounts of particulates that can find their way inside homes despite sealed windows. These particles can include pollen, mold spores, dust mites, pet dander, and even small insects or insect parts, all of which can exacerbate respiratory issues like coughing.

For your situation, it's advisable to have a professional inspection done. The UAE doesn't specifically mandate regular duct cleaning but it is recommended by HVAC experts and the World Health Organization (WHO) for maintaining good indoor air quality, especially in areas prone to dust storms like the Dubai area.

A professional inspection can help identify any blockages or issues within your ductwork that might be contributing to poor airflow and increased allergens. They can also clean out any buildup which may have been causing your coughing fits at night when using the AC.

Regular maintenance of your HVAC system, including duct cleaning, is highly recommended. Depending on how often you use your air conditioning and the environment in your area, it's wise to consider a thorough cleaning every 2-3 years. However, if you notice any significant changes or issues like persistent coughing after dust storms, it may be time for an earlier service.

If you're unsure about where to start, contact a local environmental inspection and remediation company such as Saniservice. Their team can offer professional advice and services tailored specifically to the needs of Dubai residents.
