Should I clean ductwork after a dust storm?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I noticed an awful smell lingering in the living room. The windows were closed for days to keep out more debris, and now it feels like the air is thick with something not-quite-dust but definitely particulate matter. Given how long this has been going on, should I be concerned about the ductwork, and how urgent is it to have it cleaned?

Absolutely, it's highly recommended to clean your ductwork post-dust storm. The particulates that got trapped inside can breed mold and bacteria which might have caused the lingering smell you're experiencing. In Dubai and the UAE, dust storms are a common occurrence during certain times of the year, making regular maintenance essential.

Firstly, check if your local regulations or guidelines suggest any specific actions post-dust event. The Building Code in UAE doesn't explicitly mandate duct cleaning after storms but it's always a good idea to keep the air quality as clean as possible, especially when the environment is more prone to dust and particulates.

The accumulation of such particles can lead to several issues including reduced airflow, increased energy consumption due to your AC or heater working harder, and most importantly, health concerns. Dust mites, pollen, mold spores, and other allergens thrive in these conditions which can exacerbate respiratory issues for you and your family.

Given the current situation, it's prudent to call a professional for an inspection. They will be able to assess if your ducts need cleaning or if there are any hidden issues that could pose more significant risks. At Saniservice, we recommend a thorough inspection of your HVAC system which includes the ductwork. Our team can use specialized equipment to remove dirt, dust, and other particulates from hard-to-reach areas.

If you decide against professional help, ensure you have good ventilation in the living room to disperse any lingering smells or particles. Regularly cleaning filters and maintaining your AC unit are also crucial steps in keeping indoor air quality up to par.

Remember, it's better to be cautious than sorry later on. So don't delay! Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional assessment and cleaning service. Your family’s health is our top priority.

If you're not sure about the urgency, keep an eye out for any visible signs of mold growth in your ducts or around your AC unit. Mold can be hard to spot but once identified it should be addressed quickly to prevent further spread through your home's air circulation system.

Hope this helps and do stay safe!
