Should I clean mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a strange musty smell coming from under my kitchen cabinets. Upon closer inspection, there seems to be some mold growth down there, which doesn’t look too bad but is concerning. Given our location in Dubai’s Al Barsha area and considering how long we've lived here without any issues, should I just try cleaning it myself or would it be better to hire a professional?

Cleaning mold can be tricky especially considering the climate and environment we experience here in Dubai. The first thing you should do is assess the extent of the growth. If it's only a small patch, like under your kitchen cabinets, cleaning might just suffice. However, if it has spread or if you are unsure about how to handle it properly, it’s highly recommended that you call in professionals.

In the UAE, mold inspection and remediation must adhere to specific guidelines to ensure public health and safety. The Environmental Health Department in Dubai oversees these regulations, ensuring that any procedures followed by professionals are up to standard. Given your situation, if you notice a musty smell or see visible mold growth, it’s wise to call 800-MOLDS (or 800-66537) for a professional inspection.

Cleaning mold yourself can be dangerous if not done properly. You risk spreading spores around and potentially causing more damage than good. Professional mold remediation companies use specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums, negative air machines, and biocides that are effective in eliminating mold colonies without causing further issues.

If you decide to go the DIY route for minor cases, here’s a simple guide:

1. Wear protective gear: gloves, mask, goggles.
2. Clear out the area of all items if possible, as some materials may need to be discarded.
3. Scrub the affected surfaces with a mixture of water and detergent or a biocide solution.
4. Allow the area to dry completely before returning any items.
5. Check for any signs of re-growth over time.

Remember, if you ever feel uncomfortable about handling mold yourself or if the situation seems more complex than just a small patch, it's best to seek professional help. Don’t hesitate to call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for advice tailored specifically to your area in Al Barsha and beyond.

If you choose to go with professionals, they will not only clean the mold but also provide recommendations on how to prevent future issues based on the findings from their inspection.
