Is damp smell in basement during rainy season normal?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain we had last month, I noticed a persistent damp smell in our basement, especially after the air conditioning was turned on. The walls seem to be retaining moisture despite the dehumidifier running non-stop. Has anyone else experienced similar issues in Dubai during rainy seasons and what can we do about it?

The damp smell in your basement during the rainy season isn't unusual. In the UAE and especially Dubai, we experience variable weather patterns where periods of heavy rain can lead to higher humidity levels. This can result in moisture retention within structures, particularly in areas like basements which are often below ground level.

However, if you're noticing a persistent damp smell even with dehumidifiers running non-stop, it's important to take action. The walls might be retaining more moisture than your current system can handle. In the UAE, there isn't specific legislation regarding indoor air quality for residential buildings like in some countries, but ensuring good ventilation and moisture management is crucial.

Firstly, ensure that you're using a high-capacity dehumidifier or consider adding one if the existing unit seems insufficient. Check to see if any leaks are present; inspecting plumbing, roof areas, and windows can help identify sources of additional moisture.

Another practical step would be to improve air circulation in your basement. Open windows when weather permits, even for a short time, to allow fresh air to enter and displaced moist air to exit. If you're not comfortable doing these yourself or if the problem persists despite your efforts, it's advisable to call professionals for an inspection.

At Saniservice, we specialize in such issues and can help assess the situation with our expert team. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or send us an email at hello@saniservice.com.
