Is mold near children's room windows safe?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy storms last week, I noticed a strange mold growing along the base of the walls near our children’s room windows in the coastal villa. It’s particularly concerning as the kids spend most of their time playing close to that area. Have anyone here faced similar issues and what did you do to address it?

The mold near your children's room windows is definitely concerning. In the UAE, especially in coastal areas like Dubai, humidity levels can be quite high due to our proximity to the sea. This makes it a prime condition for molds and other microorganisms to thrive.

First off, it’s crucial that you address this issue promptly. Mold growth in close proximity to children's play areas is particularly problematic as these areas are where kids spend significant time, including sleeping or playing. Children can be more susceptible to mold-related health issues like respiratory problems, allergies, and infections.

Given the specific conditions in Dubai, it’s advised that you get a professional inspection done. The UAE has stringent regulations on indoor environmental quality, especially for residential properties. According to the UAE Council Decision No. 6 of 2014, buildings must meet certain standards to ensure the health and safety of occupants. A certified inspector can assess the extent of mold growth, identify its source, and recommend a course of action.

In the meantime, you should take some immediate steps:
• Ensure good ventilation in the affected area by opening windows if weather permits.
• Use dehumidifiers or air conditioners to reduce moisture levels.
• Clean the affected areas with a solution of water and detergent. Be sure to wear gloves and other protective clothing.
• Discard any heavily contaminated items that cannot be cleaned effectively.

Remember, prevention is key in such scenarios. Regularly check for signs of mold growth, especially after storms or periods of high humidity. If you notice any musty odors or see discoloration on your walls, it’s a good idea to act quickly.
