Is odorous dust from storms harmful to kids?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I’ve noticed a strange odor lingering in the corner of the living room where the children like to play. It’s not too bad, but it’s definitely there, and I’m worried about them breathing it in. Given that we have small children, I’m really concerned about what might be causing this smell and how to clean up properly without further irritating their already stuffy noses. Have you had any experiences with cleaning up after similar storms or knowing if there's a safe way to address this issue?

Absolutely, odorous dust from storms can be harmful to kids. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we've seen several instances where storms like the one you mentioned bring in a variety of irritants and allergens that could affect your household's air quality and pose risks to children’s health.

The odor might come from a mix of things – possibly mold spores, chemical residues, or even fine particulates. Given the climate and frequent sandstorms in our region, it’s not uncommon for such storms to stir up dust and other particles that can settle into hard-to-reach corners, like where your kids play.

To address this issue properly, a few steps should be taken. First, ensure good ventilation if you are able to do so without letting too much dust in. Open windows cautiously or use fans to circulate the air gently. Avoid using any chemicals that might release additional irritants into the air until it's clear what’s causing the smell.

After the storm has passed, a thorough cleaning is necessary. Use a damp cloth or mop to clean surfaces, especially those where kids spend time. Pay attention to corners and under furniture where dust tends to accumulate. Consider investing in HEPA filters for your HVAC system if you don't have them already – these can help trap tiny particles that might be floating around.

If the smell persists or if you notice any signs of mold growth, it’s best to call in a professional for an inspection. Here at Saniservice, we provide environmental inspections and remediation services specifically tailored to our region's climate conditions. Our team can help identify the source of the odor and recommend safe methods to clean up without further irritating your children's sensitive noses.
