Is mold causing my kids' health issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be running non-stop these days, but the air still feels stuffy and heavy. I’ve noticed a musty smell coming from one of the corners near the children’s bedroom, and my kids have been complaining about having headaches and coughing more frequently since we moved into this building two years ago. Could it be mold growing in that corner due to poor ventilation? What can I do to improve the air quality for them?

It sounds like your concerns about mold growth and its potential impact on the air quality and health of your family are valid. In Dubai/UAE, where we experience high humidity during certain times of the year, it's not unusual for such issues to arise.

Mold can indeed be a significant factor in causing respiratory problems, headaches, and other health issues in children and adults alike. The musty smell you're detecting could very well indicate mold growth, especially if it’s accompanied by increased humidity levels or poor ventilation around the corner of your children's bedroom.

In UAE, indoor air quality is governed by several guidelines and standards to ensure public health. While not all buildings are required to meet these standards, it's highly recommended that you consult with a professional for an inspection and further guidance tailored to your specific situation in Dubai.

Firstly, I would suggest you take immediate steps to enhance ventilation. Open windows whenever possible, even if just for short periods, especially during cooler times of the day when outdoor air quality is better. Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove excess moisture, as mold thrives in damp conditions.

Secondly, consider running a dehumidifier, which can help reduce indoor humidity levels. Aim to keep your home's relative humidity between 30% to 50%, as recommended by the UAE’s Environmental Health Authority (EHA).

If you're unable to detect any improvement or if mold growth is confirmed during an inspection, it might be necessary to call in a professional team for remediation.
