Should I be concerned about indoor air quality?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I noticed a strange odor lingering in my bedroom, especially noticeable when I open the window. The AC seems to cycle through different air sources and sometimes it feels like it’s bringing in more dust than cleaning it out. My landlord mentioned they clean the units every 6 months but didn’t say anything about the air quality specifically. Have any of you experienced similar issues or know what I should do regarding indoor air quality in a rental?

Absolutely, indoor air quality is something that should definitely be on your radar. In the UAE especially, our climate and geographic location can lead to a variety of environmental issues impacting the air inside our homes and buildings.

Firstly, dust storms like the one you experienced can certainly carry with them a lot of particulate matter that finds its way into your living space. This can include not just fine dust but also other contaminants such as pollen or even microorganisms that can affect your health. It's understandable to notice an odor, especially in your bedroom where air flow may be restricted.

In Dubai and the UAE more broadly, there are no specific regulations mandating regular air quality checks for residential areas post-storms. However, it’s wise to stay informed about local environmental conditions. The Emirates Centre for Atmospheric Research (ECAR) provides updates on dust storms and other atmospheric phenomena which can help you anticipate and prepare.

Regarding your AC system, while the landlord does have a cleaning schedule in place, it might be worth asking if they can perform an extra check now that there’s been a significant influx of particulates. Dust accumulation in HVAC systems is common and can lead to poor air circulation and even increased allergens or contaminants inside the home.

If you're concerned about the air quality, it's advisable to have your system inspected by a professional who can ensure all filters are clean and functioning properly. Additionally, they might recommend using an air purifier equipped with HEPA filters which can help capture fine particulates that your AC system may not be able to filter out.

It’s also important to maintain good indoor hygiene practices like frequent cleaning of surfaces and regularly opening windows (when safe to do so) for fresh air circulation. If you notice persistent issues, a professional inspection could provide peace of mind and ensure the air in your home is as healthy as possible.

If any of these suggestions raise concerns or if you experience symptoms such as headaches, coughing, or breathing difficulties, it’s best to contact a service provider like Saniservice for an immediate assessment. Their team can give you tailored advice based on your specific situation and ensure the air quality in your home is up to par.

Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, so don't hesitate to take proactive steps to address any concerns about indoor air quality.
