Are ducts causing our coughs and sneezes?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last month, I’ve noticed a persistent cough and sneezing in both my son and myself whenever we stay in our bedroom. The windows there get so much dust even though they’re mostly closed during these storms. We live on the 5th floor of an apartment complex, so I’m worried about how clean the ducts are. Have any of you noticed health issues after living here for a while that might be linked to duct cleanliness?

Ducts can indeed play a significant role in indoor air quality and might be contributing to your symptoms. After the heavy dust storms we've been experiencing recently, it's quite plausible that dust particles are circulating through your apartment’s ductwork and landing on surfaces like bedroom windows. Dust storms carry lots of tiny particles which could get trapped in your HVAC system over time.
In Dubai/UAE, duct cleaning is regulated by several guidelines but there aren't specific local laws mandating regular maintenance for residential properties. However, it's a good practice to have your HVAC system and ducts inspected every 3-5 years or sooner if you notice increased allergens or if you've experienced severe weather events like the recent dust storms. Persistent coughing and sneezing in your bedroom could be due to various factors including but not limited to poor air quality from your ductwork. Ducts can become clogged with debris, mold spores, pet dander, pollen, and other allergens which get stirred up when the HVAC system runs. This can indeed exacerbate respiratory issues. Given your symptoms, it would be wise to consider a professional inspection of your ducts. Many companies in Dubai offer this service using specialized equipment that can clean hard-to-reach areas and remove accumulated contaminants effectively. This could potentially improve your indoor air quality significantly. If you do decide to go ahead with an inspection, make sure the company uses NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaning Association) certified technicians who follow stringent cleaning procedures. These professionals will not only clean but also check for any damage or leaks in your ductwork that might be contributing to poor air circulation. After the inspection and if necessary, professional duct cleaning can help reduce allergens and improve overall indoor air quality. This should provide relief from your symptoms and a healthier living environment for you and your son. Remember, keeping your home clean with regular vacuuming, dusting, and using HEPA filters in your HVAC system also helps but might not be sufficient to address the deeper issues that can arise from ductwork contamination.
