Is musty smell from closet harmful?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment a few months ago, I’ve noticed that every time it rains, there’s this awful musty smell coming from the storage closet in my kids’ room. They’ve been coughing more lately, and I’m worried about mold or dust mites. The AC is set to run pretty much 24/7 during these humid days, but I can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t right. Have anyone else experienced this smell or know what might be causing it?

The musty smell from the closet can be a sign of mold growth. Mold thrives in damp and humid environments which are common conditions especially during the rainy season in Dubai/UAE. This smell could indeed indicate that there’s an issue you need to address quickly, not only for comfort but also for your family's health.

In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we often experience high humidity levels, making mold growth a more likely occurrence. If you've noticed this musty smell and your children have been coughing more frequently, it would be wise to act on these signs immediately. Mold can release spores into the air which could contribute to respiratory issues such as coughs, wheezing, or even allergies.

I’d recommend having a professional inspection done by calling 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 (Saniservice). They will be able to assess the situation and provide you with a detailed report on whether there is mold growth, its extent, and recommended remediation steps. Saniservice can also offer solutions such as dehumidifiers, air purifiers, or even mold removal services if necessary.

To prevent further issues, ensure good ventilation in your apartment by using exhaust fans when showering or cooking. Regularly check for any signs of water damage or leaks that could be contributing to the high humidity levels and creating a favorable environment for mold growth. If possible, use dehumidifiers during humid periods to keep the relative humidity level down.

Remember, keeping your home clean and dry is crucial in preventing mold from forming. Keep areas like the storage closet well-ventilated and consider placing silica gel packets or baking soda at regular intervals to absorb moisture.

If you do have a musty smell and concerns about your family’s health, take action now before it becomes worse. Your peace of mind and the wellbeing of your children are important, so don’t hesitate to seek professional help.
