Could musty smell affect my son's health?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment two months ago, I’ve noticed a persistent musty smell coming from the bedroom where my son sleeps. It’s especially noticeable right after it rains outside or when the air conditioning is on. My son has been coughing more than usual lately and I’m really worried about his health. Could this be related to indoor air quality issues?

Yes, the musty smell could very well be affecting your son's health. The smell is often associated with dampness and mold growth which can lead to a range of respiratory issues, especially for children who have weaker immune systems or are more susceptible to allergies.

In Dubai/UAE, it's not uncommon for high humidity levels and frequent rainfall to cause such indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns. The UAE doesn’t have specific regulations that directly address musty smells, but adherence to general building codes and standards is crucial for maintaining a healthy living environment.

It’s important to address this issue promptly as mold can produce spores and mycotoxins which might irritate your son's airways, leading to coughing or other respiratory symptoms. The combination of the smell and his increased coughing suggests that indoor air quality could be compromised.

I recommend you call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. An expert can assess whether mold is present and provide guidance on how to remediate the situation safely. They might suggest increasing ventilation, drying out damp areas, or even replacing materials that are prone to mold growth.

While you wait for an inspection, consider improving indoor air quality by using a dehumidifier in your son’s bedroom, keeping windows slightly open if possible (to allow for some cross-ventilation), and ensuring good airflow throughout the apartment. It's also wise to check for any leaks or water damage that could be contributing to the musty smell.

Remember, proactive measures can help prevent further health issues for your family. Don’t hesitate to seek professional advice – your son’s comfort and wellbeing should be a priority.
