Is dampness causing mildew in rarely used basement storage?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a mildew smell coming from the basement storage area. It's only in one of the corners where we keep all the boxes and rarely use them. The walls seem damp there too. Has anyone else experienced this issue with mold or mildew buildup in such areas?

Absolutely! Dampness is the perfect breeding ground for mildew and mold. In Dubai/UAE, given our climate, it's understandable to see such issues arising after heavy rains. The damp conditions you're experiencing could indeed be leading to the growth of mildew in that rarely used basement storage area.

Firstly, I recommend checking the humidity levels in your home using a hygrometer. High relative humidity (RH) levels above 60% can promote mold and mildew growth. In Dubai, maintaining low RH is crucial as our climate can be quite humid.

Secondly, inspecting the walls for any signs of water intrusion or leaks is essential. It’s not uncommon to find these in basements due to seepage from poor waterproofing or even from underground utilities.

Since you only see this issue in one corner of your basement storage area, it might indicate localized dampness rather than a widespread problem. However, for peace of mind and to ensure the safety of stored items, I highly recommend calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.

The UAE has specific building codes that require proper ventilation and waterproofing in basements. If your home is older, it might not comply with current standards, leading to such issues. For newer constructions, adherence to the Building Control Department (BCD) regulations should be a priority.

To prevent future occurrences of dampness and mildew, consider these practical tips:
• Improve ventilation by installing exhaust fans in the basement.
• Use dehumidifiers if your home is prone to high humidity.
• Ensure proper drainage around your property and maintain it regularly.
• Seal any cracks or gaps in walls and floors to keep water out.

Remember, addressing this issue early can save you from more serious problems down the line. Taking proactive steps now will help protect both your health and your belongings.
