Could mold be causing our symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had a few weeks ago, I’ve noticed a persistent musty smell in the corner of my living room. The area is usually covered with an old Persian rug, but even when it’s not there, the smell lingers. My husband and I have been feeling more tired than usual, and both our kids have started coughing at night. Could this be related to some kind of mold or dust in that corner? What can we do to clean it up properly without causing more health issues for us?

Could mold be causing our symptoms?

Absolutely, it's very likely that the musty smell and persistent coughing could be linked to mold. Mold can grow in damp environments and thrives in areas with high humidity levels, which is not uncommon for Dubai during certain seasons or after heavy dust storms.

In the UAE, especially in Dubai, we experience varying degrees of moisture due to our climate conditions. Given that the smell persists even when the Persian rug isn't there, it suggests a deeper issue. Mold can grow under carpets and rugs, behind walls, or in corners where air circulation is poor.

The musty odor often indicates the presence of mold spores, which can irritate respiratory systems, leading to coughing and fatigue. In the UAE, health regulations recommend that any suspicion of mold growth should be taken seriously due to the potential impact on residents' well-being.

If you suspect mold in your living room corner, it's crucial to act swiftly. First, try to ensure good ventilation by opening windows if possible or using a fan to improve air circulation. Avoid using dehumidifiers as they can sometimes exacerbate moisture issues; instead, use a damp cloth to wipe down the area where you've noticed the smell.

However, given the severity of your symptoms and concerns about your kids' health, it's highly advisable to call in professionals for an inspection. You might consider reaching out to Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com. They can provide a thorough assessment and recommend the best course of action.

Remember, if mold is confirmed, it's important to address the issue promptly with proper remediation techniques to prevent further health issues for your family.
