Could dusty smells and allergy symptoms be from ductwork issues?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I noticed a strong dusty smell lingering in my bedroom even after I cleaned everything. The AC unit in there has been running more than usual too. My kids have also complained of itchy eyes and runny noses lately. Could this be due to ductwork issues? What signs should I look for or what steps should I take next?

Could dusty smells and allergy symptoms be from ductwork issues? Yes, they could indeed. In the UAE especially during dust storms, it's common to find such symptoms linked to poor indoor air quality which can often stem from your HVAC system, particularly the ductwork.

In Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, the climate conditions can exacerbate indoor pollution. Dust and particulates blown in by heavy winds get trapped within your AC units and duct systems. Over time, these accumulations can lead to musty odors and even act as a breeding ground for mold which can worsen respiratory issues.

Firstly, you should check if you've noticed any visible signs of dust or dirt build-up on the exterior of your HVAC system. If it's looking particularly grimy, chances are there is more inside the ducts too. Additionally, if your AC unit has been running more than usual to cool down your bedroom, it could indicate that air flow through the ducts is restricted which might be due to blockages from dust and debris.

The symptoms you've described – dusty smell, runny nose, and itchy eyes in kids - are often associated with allergies triggered by airborne particles like dust mites, mold spores, or pet dander. All these can thrive inside your ducts if not regularly cleaned.

Given the specifics of the UAE's climate and your recent experience during a dust storm, it might be prudent to schedule an inspection for your HVAC system and specifically your ductwork. The UAE Department of Health and its regulations require regular maintenance of AC systems in public buildings but guidelines for private residential units can vary. However, it’s always wise to ensure the quality of indoor air, especially if you or your family members are experiencing allergy symptoms.

A professional inspection is recommended to identify any issues such as blocked ducts, excessive dust accumulation, and potential mold growth. These inspections not only help in diagnosing current problems but also offer guidance on how to maintain good indoor air quality moving forward.
