Should I clean ducts after dust storm?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I’ve noticed a persistent cough and sneezing since then. The smell in my bedroom is really unpleasant, like something musty and stale. My kids have been complaining of itchy eyes and runny noses too. Should I consider cleaning the ducts in my apartment to see if that helps?

Absolutely, given the recent dust storm and the symptoms you're experiencing, it's highly probable that your ductwork has accumulated a substantial amount of debris and allergens. In the UAE, particularly Dubai, such storms can release a lot of particulates into the air which then get trapped within the HVAC system. These particles can include dust, pollen, mold spores, and even microscopic contaminants.

Firstly, it's important to note that in the UAE, especially in areas like Dubai, there are no specific regulations mandating duct cleaning after storms. However, given the conditions during a sandstorm, professional inspection of your ducts could be beneficial to ensure they're not harboring any harmful substances.

Given what you've experienced with coughing, sneezing, and eye irritation—especially in a room that has been closed off for some time—it’s reasonable to assume that allergens from the storm have settled within your ventilation system. These can circulate throughout your home, contributing significantly to respiratory issues and other allergic reactions.

I'd recommend you contact a professional environmental inspection and remediation company like Saniservice, who operate in Dubai and can offer a thorough assessment of your ductwork. They'll be able to identify any contaminants present and provide the necessary cleaning services to ensure that your indoor environment is safe for you and your family.

In addition to professional cleaning, consider improving your HVAC system’s efficiency by changing air filters more frequently than usual after such storms. This can help reduce the amount of dust and debris circulating in your home.

Lastly, don’t forget about maintaining good ventilation in your apartment, especially during periods when there is no significant outdoor breeze. Opening windows or using exhaust fans to clear out stale air might provide some temporary relief until you can have a professional inspection and cleaning completed.

So, do give Saniservice a call at 800-MOLDS or email them at hello@saniservice.com for an expert consultation and action plan to address your concerns.
