Should I clean mold myself or hire professionals?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed water stains forming on the ceiling of my bedroom, which has a large window. The floor also seems to be getting more dusty than usual even with regular cleaning. Should I consider hiring professional cleaners or can I manage it myself given that we've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these issues?

When dealing with water stains and increased dustiness after the recent rain, it's indeed wise to consider your options carefully. While you can certainly attempt some initial cleaning yourself, there are a few key factors worth considering.

Firstly, in the UAE, specifically Dubai, building regulations emphasize indoor air quality (IAQ) and health safety standards. If water intrusion is noticed, it’s crucial to act quickly to prevent further damage that could compromise your living environment. Water stains can be indicative of a more serious issue such as leaks or humidity problems, which may require professional inspection and remediation.

Regarding the dustiness, this might just be due to changes in the weather conditions but if it persists despite regular cleaning, it's worth investigating whether there are underlying issues like mold growth that could be contributing. Mold can thrive in damp environments and is particularly common after heavy rainfall or flooding events.

If you choose to clean yourself, start by assessing the extent of the water damage or mold growth. For minor cases, using a mixture of water and mild detergent on non-porous surfaces might help. However, for porous materials like ceiling tiles or walls, professional cleaning may be necessary.

Here are some tips:
• Wear protective gear such as gloves and masks when handling cleaning chemicals.
• Ensure good ventilation in the area you're cleaning to avoid inhaling dust particles.
• Clean from top to bottom to prevent spreading mold spores around.
• Dry surfaces thoroughly after cleaning.

However, if you notice any signs of active mold growth, black or green spots on your ceiling, floor, or walls, a musty odor, or if the area looks more dusty than usual even with regular cleaning, it's highly advisable to call in professionals. They have the expertise and equipment needed to properly identify and remediate any mold issues.

In Dubai, you can reach out to Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email them at hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection and remediation. They can provide the necessary services to ensure your home is safe and healthy.

Remember, when it comes to indoor environmental quality in Dubai, it's better to be cautious than sorry later on.
