How to protect kids from sandstorms?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment on the fourth floor of a residential building near Bur Dubai two months ago, sandstorms seem to hit almost every other day. Even though my windows are sealed tightly with blackout curtains, I can still see particles floating inside when the wind is strong. My kids have been complaining of coughing fits and runny noses whenever one hits, especially in the evening after the storms. Have any of you experienced similar issues or know how to better protect our family from these sandstorms?

Protecting kids from sandstorms can be quite the challenge, especially given their sensitivity and the frequent occurrence of such storms in Dubai. Here are some practical steps you can take to safeguard your family:

Firstly, keeping windows tightly sealed is a good start but might not be enough. Consider adding an air purifier with a HEPA filter to trap those fine particles that can irritate respiratory systems. Inexpensive models work well and can be found in local malls or online.

Secondly, monitor weather reports for sandstorm alerts and plan accordingly. If a storm is coming, close all windows and doors, turn off the air conditioning, and switch on your purifier if you have one. You might also want to set up a room with a high-quality humidifier to help ease any discomfort caused by dry air.

Thirdly, keep kids indoors as much as possible during sandstorms. If they must go out, ensure they wear masks designed for dust and pollen - not just regular face masks. These can be found in pharmacies or specialized stores. Also, make sure their hands are clean before they touch anything inside to avoid bringing more particles in.

Fourthly, keep a supply of over-the-counter allergy medications on hand. Antihistamines and decongestants might provide relief for symptoms like coughing and runny noses, but always check with a pharmacist or doctor first to ensure the right choice for your child's age and condition.

Lastly, it’s good practice to have an environmental inspection done by professionals every few months. This can help you understand any hidden issues in your apartment that might be exacerbated during sandstorms. Here at SanIService, we offer professional inspections and remediation services tailored to Dubai's climate and conditions.

Don't hesitate to reach out if you need more information or assistance. We're here to help keep your family safe and healthy amidst the challenges of living in a sandy environment like Dubai.
