Is indoor air quality affected by dust storms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I’ve noticed a persistent odor in the living room that’s especially noticeable when the windows are closed. My kids have been complaining of itchy eyes and coughing more frequently since then. Could this be related to indoor air quality? What steps should I take to improve the air in my home, particularly for their health?

Yeah, indoor air quality can definitely be affected by dust storms. Dust and other particulates brought in from the outside environment during such storms can settle on surfaces and get stirred up as you go about your daily activities. This means that even though you may notice an odor or irritation after a storm, it is very likely related to the increase of airborne particles indoors.

In Dubai/UAE, we've seen several dust storms where sand and other fine particulates from the desert can infiltrate buildings. This not only contributes to poor indoor air quality but also brings along allergens that could irritate your family's respiratory system, causing symptoms like coughing or itchy eyes which you're seeing.

To address this situation, I'd recommend taking a few steps right away:

1. Check Your HVAC System: Ensure that your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is functioning correctly. Filter out any dust and debris by cleaning or replacing filters as needed.

2. Ventilation: Open windows if the weather permits to allow fresh air to circulate but keep an eye on external conditions. If you have to keep them closed due to dusty outside, use air purifiers with HEPA filters to help remove allergens and particles from the air.

3. Humidifier: Dust storms can lead to dry air which in turn could irritate your family's respiratory system. A humidifier may be useful to add moisture back into the air.

4. Professional Inspection: If the issue persists or if you notice other unusual symptoms, consider getting a professional indoor air quality inspection. In Dubai and the UAE, companies like Saniservice can provide expert assessments and recommendations tailored for local conditions.

5. Regular Maintenance: Keep up with regular maintenance of your home's ventilation systems to ensure they are working optimally in filtering out pollutants and allergens.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial, especially when you live in an area prone to such environmental challenges like dust storms. By taking proactive steps now, you can help ensure a healthier living environment for your family.
