Who is responsible for cleaning mold behind cabinets?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a bit of mold growing behind the cabinets in the kitchen. My landlord hasn't responded to my messages about it yet, and I'm not sure if it's on me to clean this up or if they're responsible for the common areas. Given that we've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, should I be cleaning this myself?

In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, indoor environmental quality and building maintenance are governed by several guidelines. When it comes to mold behind cabinets, understanding who's responsible can be a bit tricky as it depends on whether this area is part of your living space or considered common property.

Typically, if the cabinets are within your personal living quarters, you would be expected to take care of minor cleaning tasks such as mold removal. However, given that you've only noticed it recently and considering the duration you’ve been in the property, it might be wise to first confirm with your landlord whether this area is indeed considered part of your private space or if it's a shared area.

If it’s a shared area, your landlord would likely be responsible for addressing such issues. But as per the Environmental Health Authority (EHA) and other relevant local authorities in Dubai, landlords are generally expected to maintain common areas to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all tenants.

It is advisable that you raise this issue with your landlord or property manager promptly. If they do not address it within a reasonable time frame, you might want to consider reaching out to a professional environmental inspection company like Saniservice for an assessment. They can provide you with expert advice on the extent of the mold and how best to handle it.

Remember, dealing with mold is not just about aesthetic concerns; it can pose health risks especially if it’s in areas that are not well-ventilated. Saniservice offers a range of services including professional mold inspection, remediation, and air quality testing which could be beneficial for your situation.

If you decide to clean the area yourself, ensure you follow safety guidelines: wear protective gear such as gloves and masks, use appropriate cleaning solutions like a mixture of water and bleach or specialized mold removers, and make sure the area is well-ventilated. For larger areas or persistent issues, professional help is recommended.

In Dubai, it's also important to stay in compliance with local regulations regarding indoor air quality and mold management. If you need further assistance or want to schedule a consultation, feel free to call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for expert guidance tailored to your specific situation.

So, whether it’s your responsibility or not, addressing the issue promptly is key to maintaining both health and property conditions in line with UAE standards.
