Could desert sand cause health issues?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new home near the desert two years ago, I’ve noticed a fine dust settling on everything in my living room. Even with regular cleaning, it’s still there, especially after sandstorms. Lately, my kids have been complaining of coughing fits and sore throats every time they come inside from playing outside during these storms. Is this just due to the sand or could it be something more harmful?

Desert sand can indeed cause health issues, especially during sandstorms. In the UAE, including Dubai, we have experienced several intense storms that bring fine dust and particles into our homes, affecting indoor air quality significantly.

The issue you're facing isn't just a simple matter of sand settling; it could be more harmful. The dust from desert areas often contains microorganisms, pollen, pesticides, and other pollutants which can irritate the respiratory system. For your kids experiencing coughing fits and sore throats post-sandstorms, these symptoms are quite common and point towards potential health risks.

In Dubai and across the UAE, regulations regarding indoor air quality focus on maintaining healthy conditions for residents. However, in severe cases like yours, it's advisable to get a professional environmental inspection. This can help identify specific pollutants present and suggest remedial actions that may not be obvious through regular cleaning alone.

For instance, using HEPA filters in your HVAC system could significantly reduce particle levels in your home. Additionally, keeping windows closed during sandstorms and running air purifiers can also help filter out harmful particles. It’s important to maintain good indoor hygiene practices too—regularly vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner can collect dust more effectively.

If you find that the situation hasn't improved or if symptoms persist, it might be time to contact us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. We have extensive experience dealing with such cases and can provide tailored solutions for your specific needs.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial, particularly in areas prone to sandstorms. Taking proactive steps now could prevent more serious health issues down the line.
