Is duct cleaning linked to my home odors?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm a few weeks ago, I noticed a strange odor lingering in my bedroom, especially when the air conditioner is on. The smell is faint but persistent, and it’s making me feel a bit unwell. My kids have been complaining of coughing and runny noses since then too. Could this be related to duct cleaning? What should I do?

Duct cleaning can be linked to your home odors but it's not the only possible cause. After the dust storm you experienced a few weeks back, it wouldn't be surprising if some of that debris got stuck inside your HVAC system and started causing issues.

In Dubai/UAE, we have specific regulations around indoor air quality (IAQ) and ductwork maintenance, particularly in buildings constructed after 2016. The UAE Building Code (UAE-BC) requires regular cleaning and inspection to ensure the ducts are free from contaminants that could affect IAQ. However, if you're experiencing a strange odor, it might not be solely due to dust or debris; other factors such as mold growth, bacteria, or chemical residues could also play a role.

The odors you mentioned in your bedroom especially when the AC is on could indeed hint at some sort of contamination within the ducts. Mold, which thrives in damp conditions, can produce musty smells and may have caused respiratory issues like coughing and runny noses for your kids. Dust mites or pet dander might also be contributing to these symptoms.

Given the concerns you've raised, it would be wise to call 800-MOLDS (or 800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection of your ducts. They can help identify any issues and provide remediation if necessary.

Remember that regular maintenance is key in keeping your indoor environment healthy, especially post-storm events. A good practice would be to schedule an annual duct cleaning with a certified service provider like Saniservice who specialize in UAE-specific regulations and standards.

In the meantime, try to increase ventilation where possible by opening windows (if safe) or using exhaust fans when you're not using the air conditioner. This can help circulate fresh air through your home.

Take care of yourself and your family; their health is paramount. Hope this helps!
