Can I clean up dust and allergens myself?« Back to Previous Page

After the heat wave last week, I noticed a lot of dust and cobwebs in the corners of my bedroom. The windowsills are especially dirty from all the pollen. My kids have been sneezing more than usual, so I’m worried it might be allergens. Can someone who has cleaned their place after a long summer tell me if this is something that can be handled myself or if I should hire a professional?

Absolutely! You can handle the dust and allergens yourself, but it's important to do so carefully. After an intense heat wave like the one you experienced, it’s common for dust to accumulate, especially in corners and on windowsills. The pollen from the outdoors is likely what your kids are reacting to.

Firstly, ensure that you wear a mask while cleaning. In Dubai, dust can contain particles including fine sand and other pollutants which might irritate your airways or those of your children. A simple disposable dust mask should suffice for most tasks.

Start by opening windows if weather permits. This not only helps in reducing indoor humidity but also allows fresh air to circulate, potentially easing allergy symptoms. However, make sure that the outdoor air quality is good before doing so, as it can be higher during summer due to vehicle emissions and construction dust.

Next, use a damp cloth or mop to wipe down surfaces like windowsills, corners of walls, and baseboards where dust tends to accumulate. Avoid dry sweeping which can just redistribute dust into the air. For carpets and rugs, if they are machine washable, give them a gentle rinse in warm water with some mild detergent before airing out.

For more stubborn allergens like mold or mildew, you might want to use a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water (though in Dubai, due to the high heat and humidity, it’s wise to check for any local guidelines as bleach can be harsh). Spray this solution on surfaces that have visible signs of mold and gently scrub with a brush or sponge. Rinse thoroughly afterward.

Remember to clean your air conditioning filters every 1-2 weeks during peak summer months as they tend to collect a lot of dust and pollen. This not only improves the indoor air quality but also enhances the efficiency of your AC unit.

Lastly, consider investing in an air purifier if you find that allergies are still persisting despite these steps. In Dubai, models with HEPA filters are particularly effective at trapping allergens like pollen, dust mites, and other fine particles.

While you can manage this situation yourself, it’s always a good idea to have your home inspected by professionals for any serious issues such as mold growth or asbestos, especially in old buildings. If in doubt, contact us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for an expert opinion and remediation if needed.

With these steps, you should see a significant improvement in the cleanliness of your home and reduce allergy symptoms.
