Can high humidity cause persistent damp smells?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a persistent damp smell in the basement of our villa. The area doesn't get much ventilation, and the humidity seems to be pretty high even with the dehumidifier running. Is this something that could potentially be managed on my own, or do you think we might need professional help to tackle it?

High humidity can indeed cause persistent damp smells. In the UAE like Dubai, where we experience high temperatures and occasional heavy rains, it's common to see issues related to moisture. The humidity levels you're experiencing in your villa's basement could be contributing to the unpleasant odors.

Firstly, it is important to understand that Dubai has its own set of regulations concerning indoor air quality which are part of the UAE Federal Law No. 21 of 2015 on Public Health and Safety. This law emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy environment within buildings, especially in areas prone to moisture such as basements.

The damp smell you're noticing can be due to mold growth - a common issue when there's excess moisture. Mold thrives in environments with humidity above 70% and temperatures around 25°C or higher. It is recommended that the relative humidity in your villa’s basement should ideally be kept below 60% for optimal indoor air quality.

You can start by improving ventilation, which might not be easy due to limited access but could still help. Consider opening windows if possible, even if it's just a small amount of time daily or using exhaust fans. Using dehumidifiers is good practice and you've already started that, but ensure you are emptying the collected water regularly.

However, given the persistent nature of your issue despite running a dehumidifier, I would recommend having a professional inspection done. Saniservice, for instance, can provide detailed assessments to pinpoint sources of moisture and recommend appropriate remediation strategies tailored specifically for Dubai’s climate conditions. Their services are available at 800-MOLDS or by emailing hello@saniservice.com.

Keep an eye out for visible signs of mold growth such as discoloration on walls, ceilings, or floors, and take immediate action if you spot any. Regular checks should be part of maintaining your home’s indoor environment, especially in areas where moisture is a concern.

Remember, addressing these issues early can prevent more serious problems down the line, including structural damage to your villa and potential health risks from mold spores.
