Is mold causing my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a moldy smell coming from the corner of our kitchen where the cabinets meet the wall. It’s particularly noticeable when we open the windows or after it rains heavily outside. The kids have been coughing more than usual lately and I’m worried it might be related to this smell. Is there anything specific I can do to clean up the mold properly and ensure their health?

Yes, it is quite possible that the mold you've noticed could be causing your kids' coughs. Mold spores can produce allergens and irritants which can trigger respiratory issues like coughing, wheezing, or congestion especially among children who have a higher sensitivity to indoor air pollutants.

In Dubai, as in many parts of the UAE, the high humidity during certain times of the year can create conditions ripe for mold growth. The moldy smell from your kitchen corner could be due to moisture accumulation at the wall-cabinet junction where water might not drain properly or where there's a gap that allows for condensation.

To address this issue effectively, you should first try to identify and eliminate the source of excess moisture, such as fixing any leaks in plumbing or ensuring proper ventilation. Using dehumidifiers can also help reduce humidity levels which could prevent further mold growth.

Cleaning the affected area is critical. You'll want to use a solution of one cup of bleach per gallon of water to scrub away the mold thoroughly, making sure to cover all areas that show signs of contamination. Be cautious when handling bleach and ensure you wear gloves and protective eyewear to avoid skin and eye irritation. After cleaning, allow the area to dry completely before using it again.

If the mold problem is extensive or if you are unsure about how to proceed, it’s advisable to call in a professional for inspection and remediation. In Dubai, companies like Saniservice can provide expert assistance ensuring your home meets safety standards as per UAE regulations which state that indoor air quality should be maintained at all times.

Remember to also monitor the health of your family members closely post-cleaning; if symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Keep windows open when possible to improve airflow and consider having an air purifier in the room to help filter out any lingering mold spores.
