How to protect marble floors from sandstorm scratches?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Arabian Ranches has these beautiful marble floors in the living area, but after the last sandstorm, I keep finding fine scratches all over them no matter how carefully we mop. I think the grit gets tracked in and our current cleaning method is just grinding it in. What’s the best way to clean and protect the floors to prevent this scratching from happening again after the next shamal?

As an expert in the UAE's unique indoor environmental challenges, I understand the frustration that fine sandstorm grit causes on marble floors, especially in areas like Arabian Ranches. The primary issue is that standard mopping, even when done carefully, acts like sandpaper, grinding the fine silica particles into the soft calcite surface of the marble.

The solution requires a multi-layered approach. First, implement a strict "no outdoor shoes" policy inside the villa. Place high-quality, long-strand doormats at every entrance to trap abrasive particles before they enter. For daily cleaning, dry methods are crucial. Use a soft-bristled broom or, better yet, a well-maintained vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment designed for hard floors to remove the bulk of the dust without pushing it around. Only after the floor is completely free of loose grit should you consider damp mopping with a pH-neutral, marble-specific cleaner. Avoid vinegar or acidic cleaners at all costs, as they will etch the stone.

Given Dubai's constant AC usage, which can create static that attracts dust, and the relentless cycle of shamals, protection is key. I highly recommend having your marble professionally honed to remove existing micro-scratches, followed by the application of a high-quality penetrating sealer. This will fill the stone's pores and create a harder, more resistant surface.

For a comprehensive assessment and to ensure the correct restoration and sealing products are used for your specific marble, a professional inspection is advised.
