Can I clean black bathroom grout myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's main bathroom has turned dark black, and no matter how much I scrub with regular cleaner, it won't come out. I think the constant humidity from our showers has caused some serious mold or mildew buildup over the last few months. Is this something I can tackle with a specific product from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

This is a very common issue we see in Dubai, particularly in older villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah. The persistent high humidity, combined with the steam from hot showers, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew deep within the porous grout. While surface scrubbing with regular cleaners is a good first attempt, it often fails because the microbial growth has penetrated the material.
For a DIY approach, I recommend a two-step process. First, use a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste made from baking soda and a small amount of water. Apply it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, and scrub with a stiff bristle brush. For tougher cases, a solution of one part chlorine bleach to four parts water can be effective—ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated and you are wearing gloves and a mask. However, please be aware that bleach can sometimes lighten colored grout and is a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. In many cases, especially with extensive black discoloration, the mold growth is too deep for consumer products to eradicate completely. The porous nature of grout means the roots of the mold remain, and it will quickly return. Furthermore, aggressive scrubbing can damage the grout, making the problem worse in the long run. For a permanent solution, a professional assessment is highly recommended. Our teams at Saniservice use industrial-grade, EPA-approved disinfectants and specialized steam cleaning equipment that reaches high temperatures to kill mold spores at the root. We can also assess the bathroom's ventilation—a critical factor in our humid climate—to prevent recurrence. If the grout is severely compromised, we may advise on re-grouting with a higher quality, mold-resistant product.
