Can I clean my black AC mold myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom AC unit has been making a constant damp, moldy smell for the last two weeks, and I just opened the vent to find the evaporator coils completely black with gunk. It's in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa, and it's been running non-stop with this heat. Is this something I can safely clean myself with a spray from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional service?

Based on the conditions you've described—a constant moldy smell and visible black microbial growth on the evaporator coil in your Jumeirah villa—this is a situation that requires professional intervention.

The UAE's climate is the primary culprit. The extreme humidity combined with fine, pervasive dust creates an ideal environment for mold and bacteria to thrive inside AC units, especially when they run continuously. While consumer-grade coil sprays from a hardware store can remove superficial dirt, they are not designed nor strong enough to remediate a significant microbial infestation. More importantly, attempting a DIY clean can be hazardous. Agitating the coil without proper containment measures can aerosolize harmful spores and bacteria throughout your bedroom, potentially causing respiratory issues. You also risk damaging the delicate fins of the coil with excessive pressure or incorrect chemicals.

Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on indoor environmental quality, and proper HVAC hygienization is a key component. A certified professional service, like Saniservice, uses EPA-approved biocides and specialized equipment to safely and thoroughly disinfect the coil, eliminate the odor at its source, and ensure the system is not contributing to poor indoor air quality. They will also perform a full inspection to identify any underlying issues, such as clogged drain pans or insufficient drainage, that caused the problem initially.

For your health and the integrity of your AC system, I strongly recommend against a DIY approach. Contact our team for a comprehensive inspection and remediation. You can reach us at 800-66537 or via email at hello@saniservice.com to schedule a service.
