How to clean closet mold and check inside wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the outer wall. It's been crazy humid the last few weeks and the AC has been struggling to keep up. What's the best way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it being a bigger problem inside the wall?

As a mold remediation expert in Dubai, I can advise that the black, fuzzy patch you've described is a common issue here, directly linked to our extreme humidity and the strain placed on AC systems. The outer wall location is a key clue; it's likely a cold spot where condensation forms, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold.

For a small patch (less than one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture source or the root structure of the mold. After cleaning, ensure the area is thoroughly dried.

However, given its location on an exterior wall, you should be concerned about a potential problem inside the wall cavity. The visible growth is often just the "tip of the iceberg." The internal insulation and structure could be significantly affected, which requires professional assessment. In the UAE, proper remediation must follow strict guidelines to prevent cross-contamination and ensure the health and safety of occupants.

Your AC struggling is a major red flag. We recommend having a professional inspection to identify the exact moisture source—whether it's a leaking pipe, insufficient insulation, or condensation from AC ductwork—and to use specialized equipment like borescopes to check inside the wall.

For a thorough inspection and a remediation plan that complies with Dubai Municipality standards, I strongly recommend contacting our team at Saniservice. Call us at 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment.
