How to remove black mold from balcony tiles in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles on my balcony in Jumeirah has turned almost black with mold, especially in the corners that don't get much sun. I've tried scrubbing it with a basic cleaner and a brush, but it barely makes a dent and it's starting to really look bad. Is this something I can tackle with a specific product from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service with stronger chemicals?

The black mold on your balcony grout in Jumeirah is an extremely common issue here in Dubai, and your struggle with basic cleaners is not surprising. The unique combination of high humidity, airborne dust (carrying fungal spores), and the shade provided by buildings creates a perfect breeding ground for persistent mold.

While a strong, off-the-shelf bleach-based cleaner or a dedicated grout cleaner from a hardware store can provide a temporary solution, it is often not a permanent fix. For a thorough job, I recommend using a solution of one part chlorine bleach to four parts water. Apply it generously to the grout, allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes without drying out, and then scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. Always ensure you are wearing gloves, eye protection, and are in a well-ventilated area. However, be cautious as repeated use of strong chemicals can degrade the grout over time.

It's important to understand that surface cleaning often doesn't address the root cause. The mold can penetrate deep into porous grout, and without professional-grade antimicrobial agents and sealing techniques, it will almost certainly return. Furthermore, improper handling can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination.

For a lasting solution, especially if the infestation is widespread or keeps recurring, a professional assessment is highly advised. At Saniservice, our hygienization process involves a detailed inspection to identify the moisture source, application of EPA-approved, non-corrosive biocides to eradicate the mold at its root, and finally, the application of a protective sealant to prevent future growth. This approach is designed to withstand the Dubai climate and provide a long-term fix.
