Should I fix damp carpet by window immediately?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom’s carpet has developed a few damp, dark patches near the window, and I’m worried it’s getting bigger. I only really noticed it a couple of days ago, but after last night’s heavy dew, it feels wetter to the touch and the musty smell is getting stronger. Is this something that needs to be dealt with immediately, or can I wait until the weekend to call a professional?

Based on the symptoms you've described—damp, dark patches that are expanding, a wet feel after high humidity, and a strengthening musty odor—this situation requires immediate attention and should not be delayed until the weekend. In Dubai's climate, characterized by high humidity, especially overnight with heavy dew, and year-round AC usage, what you are likely seeing is active microbial growth, commonly known as mold.

The dampness is almost certainly due to water intrusion. The most common causes we see are a leaking AC condensation drain line from a unit in or above the room, a poorly sealed window allowing condensate or rain ingress, or a leak from the external wall. The persistent moisture, combined with organic materials in the carpet and backing, creates an ideal environment for mold spores, which are ever-present in the air, to colonize. This poses potential risks to indoor air quality and can trigger allergic reactions or respiratory issues.

We strongly recommend a professional inspection immediately. Attempting to clean it yourself with store-bought solutions often fails to address the root cause of the moisture and can inadvertently spread spores. A certified inspector will identify and diagnose the exact source of the water intrusion, assess the extent of the contamination within the carpet, underlay, and potentially the subfloor, and provide a remediation protocol. This is crucial for preventing structural damage and safeguarding your health.
