Could a dirty AC cause my kids' cough and itchy eyes?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having this persistent dry cough and itchy eyes for the last month, and I'm starting to worry it's linked to our AC. I live in a villa in Jumeirah and when I pulled the filter out to check, it was completely clogged with a thick layer of dust and some blackish stuff. I cleaned it, but I'm concerned the mold or whatever it is has gotten into the ducts. Could this level of dirty AC be the cause of their health issues, and who should I call to properly clean the entire system?

Yes, a dirty AC system is a very likely cause of those symptoms, especially in Dubai's climate. The blackish substance on your filter is a strong indicator of accumulated dust, allergens, and potentially microbial growth like mould. When the AC runs, it can blow these particles throughout your villa, directly irritating the respiratory system and eyes.
In our environment, with year-round AC use, high humidity that promotes mould growth, and constant fine dust (aerosolized sand and pollution), systems clog quickly. A filter in that state means contaminants have almost certainly bypassed it and settled in the ductwork and evaporator coil. Simply cleaning the filter isn't enough once the system is that compromised; the source of the pollution remains. For a villa system, you need a professional duct cleaning and coil hygienization service. Look for a provider that uses HEPA-filtered vacuum extraction to remove debris from the ducts without spreading it, followed by cleaning of the evaporator coil—the cold, wet surface where mould often thrives. The most credible companies will document their process with before-and-after evidence, such as photos or even surface swab results from their microbiology lab to confirm the reduction of biological contaminants. This level of cleaning can significantly improve indoor air quality and, in many cases, alleviate the irritation causing coughs and itchy eyes. |
