Can I remove mold myself or call a pro for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I suspect it’s from the mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. It's a decent-sized black patch, maybe the size of a dinner plate. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray or should I just call a professional cleaning company to be safe?

For a patch the size of a dinner plate and given your children's symptoms, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Persistent coughing is a common reaction to mold exposure, and a patch that large suggests a significant moisture issue behind the wall that DIY cleaning won't fix. The high humidity in Dubai, especially in coastal areas like the Marina, creates ideal conditions for mold to regrow quickly if the source isn't properly identified and resolved.

You can attempt to clean a very small patch with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, but for this size and location, it's risky. Scrubbing it yourself can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your kids' cough. More importantly, the visible mold is likely just the surface manifestation; the root cause is hidden moisture, possibly from a small pipe leak, condensation from your AC unit, or capillary rising damp common in older buildings.

A professional inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to find the water source behind the wardrobe. They can also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which helps determine the health risk and appropriate remediation protocol. The goal isn't just to wipe it away but to create a dry environment where it cannot return, a critical step for any long-term rental in the UAE. For a situation involving health symptoms and concealed damage, the cost of a professional diagnosis is justified for your family's peace of mind and the integrity of your apartment.
