How to permanently control closet humidity and prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom walk-in closet has developed a really strong, musty odor over the past few weeks. I've noticed some of my leather handbags and shoes are starting to feel a bit damp to the touch, especially on the back wall that faces the outside. I run the AC constantly, but the humidity in that small, enclosed space just seems to be winning. What's the most effective way to permanently control the humidity and prevent mold from growing on my belongings?

The dampness and musty odor point to excess moisture, a common issue in Dubai's enclosed spaces despite AC use. The problem is likely localized high humidity, potentially from a slight negative pressure drawing in humid air or a nearby plumbing/AC condensate leak.

First, identify and stop the moisture source. Check for any visible water stains on the back wall or floor, which could indicate a leak from outside. Ensure the closet's door is well-sealed and can be left ajar periodically to allow air circulation from the drier, air-conditioned bedroom. Running a small, standalone dehumidifier inside the closet can provide immediate relief and is highly effective for small, sealed spaces.

For a more permanent solution, improve air movement. Installing a small, quiet exhaust fan that vents into the room or having an HVAC technician add an extra supply air vent from your main AC system directly into the closet can equalize the humidity. Your leather goods are at risk; immediately wipe them down with a dry, soft cloth and move them to a drier area until the humidity is controlled.

If the musty smell persists after addressing ventilation, a professional inspection is recommended to rule out hidden mold growth within the walls or structure, which requires specialized detection and remediation to resolve permanently.
